Mother language is a divine gift and blessing for the people of any nation in the world. “International Mother Language Day” is a glorious and unforgettable language martyrs’ day which is celebrated all over the world today. The declaration of 21st February as International Mother Language Day by UNESCO on 17 November 1999 has brought additional glory and dignity to Bangladesh.

This is a great achievement for Bangladesh, in August 1947 a new state named Pakistan emerged on the world map. Bangladesh had a highly developed culture which had little in common with the culture of the people of West Pakistan. But in 1952 the neo-colonial, power hungry, arrogant rulers of Pakistan declared that ‘Urdu’ would be the state language of Pakistan.

This announcement greatly disappointed the Bengalis. The people of East Pakistan whose mother tongue is Bengali, erupted in anger in protest against the undemocratic decision of the government. The Pakistani rulers wanted to suppress the protests by using brute force. As a result, Rafiq, Salam, Jabbar, Barkat embraced death. When the news of this death spread, all the people of the eastern region became emotional. February 21 became a symbol of lightness and honesty.

Since 1953, the immortal 21st of February is being celebrated as a great national event throughout Bangladesh and beyond the borders of Bangladesh where there is a considerable number of Bengali speaking people. Now the world will remember us and by observing International Mother Language Day, we will be closer to other countries because this is our achievement.

The cultural significance of International Mother Language Day is enough. About 200 countries of the world, speaking different languages and people of different national cultures will celebrate February 21 as International Mother Language Day. Bengali is the language of our mother, our heart. We feel great joy in expressing ourselves in this language.
