The term “global village” was coined by Marshall McLuhan as technology such as the telephone and TV brought people together around the world. For example, when we watch news of floods in another country on TV, we feel connected to what is happening there. McLuhan believed that electronic media would create a global village. In the 1990s, the concept of the global village became a reality. The Internet has made it possible for people to communicate instantly and cheaply across vast distances.
